The Peanut City Cloggers Team was officially formed in January 1983.
The team is comprised of youngsters aged 7 through adults and provides
family-type entertainment to the community. We also have an adult group
who practice monthly for recreation as well as promoting the art
of clogging. The team performs both precision and traditional clogging.
Performance times run from 30-45 minutes, depending on the particular needs
of the client.
The
team has attended workshops in Hampton, Franklin and Chesapeake, Va. and
has also traveled to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Ripley, W. Va., Harris, Maine
and the capital of clogging, Maggie Valley, N.C.
The
team regularly competes in clogging competitions including the "America's
Clogging Hall of Fame" national competition each October. They have
won numerous awards in both traditional and precision clogging. The
team also has the distinction of having two cloggers named to the 1995
and 1996 All American Clogging Teams.
In
addition to performing at private functions and private parties, the team
has performed at such events as the Annual Crab Carnival in West Point,
Va., the Oyster Bowl Parade, Oceanview Festival and the Town Point Bluegrass
Clogging Classic
in Norfolk, Va., The Muscular Dystrophy Telethon and Princess Anne
Folk Art Festival in Virginia Beach, Hampton Bay Days in Hampton,
Va., The Pork, Pine and Peanut Festival in Surry, Va.. The Watermelon
and Swamp Festivals in N.C., and at Suffolks Balloon and Peanut Festivals.
Old
fashion barn dances, sponsored by the Peanut City Cloggers and the Suffolk
Department of Parks and Recreation are also a part of the regularly scheduled
entertainment provided by the team. Barn dances are held 2-3 times a year,
providing family-type entertainment, hot/cold buffet, and generally featuring
a championship clogger as caller. These barn dances are open to the public
and usually draw a crowd of 200-300 community participants, including as
many as 4-5 area clogging teams.
